Phlegraean luxury: the Roman baths of Baia

Addovà takes us to discover one of the lesser known sites in the Phlegraean area (Area Flegrea): the splendid Roman baths of Baia.
A place of pleasure and leisure in Roman times, the ancient Baia was the favourite place of the Roman patriciate, who loved to relax on the shores of the Phlegraean coasts, and enjoy themselves with the precious thermal waters of the area.
“No bay in the world shines more than the enchanting Baia”, said Orazio, and it is no coincidence that many great poets and writers of the past have all left a message on Baia.
It was the place where people went in order to escape the chaos of the worldly life of Rome and also build their villas by the sea, as many rich Romans did.
The archaeological complex is of extraordinary historical importance and reveals a stratification of thermal complexes belonging to a phase relating to the Republican period, the Augustan and Hadrian age.
Among the most significant remains, one can find domed vaulted structures such as the so-called temples of Diana, Mercury and Venus (thermal structures and not places of worship, for which the popular name has survived).
