Phlegraean lakes: Lucrino and Averno
A fantastic journey between history and myth, to discover the luxuriant Phlegraean nature and two of the most famous lakes of the “burning” fields: Lago di Lucrino and Lago d’Averno.
We will start from the Lago di Lucrino, today largely shrunk due to the eruption of September 1538 that created the Monte Nuovo in one night. We will continue with the second lake, Averno, famous all over the world as mentioned by Homer and Virgil, which is considered the entrance to Hades.
Here stands the Temple of Apollo, a large thermal complex of the imperial age.
Surrounded by vineyards, and by dense vegetation, as well as by a very rich avifauna, the latter can undoubtedly be considered the king of the Phlegraean lakes.
