Thermal baths of via Terracina and Mostra d’oltremare
We are here to propose a new tour, in a site recently reopened to the public and therefore ready to be rediscovered: the Roman thermal complex of Fuorigrotta, an extraordinary place inserted in the urban structure of the city of Napoli.
The spa complex was rediscovered in 1939, during the works for the construction of the Mostra d’Oltremare. The baths date back to the first half of the 2nd century AD and originally developed on several levels, fed by the Serino aqueduct.
During the excavations, important mosaic floors emerged bearing the trope of the meeting and marriage between Poseidon and Amphitrite in which the whole marine universe participates.
The original entrance was on the opposite side to the current one.
Today, when entering the complex you can find some tabernae on the right, while on the left a rectangular room that served as an apodyterium (dressing room) with a mosaic floor showing Nereid sitting on the tail of a newt. You then arrive in the frigidarium, where there is a mosaic floor depicting a procession of animals.
Towards the end of this tour, we will enter the Mostra d’oltremare, where we will talk about some of the things still unknown to many of this monumental complex.
This tour awaits you!
