The amphitheatre of Capua: blood arena and ancient cults

Today, Ancient Capua, one of the most important cities of the ancient Roman Empire, is unknown to most people, despite the fact that it contains some priceless treasures of art and archaeology.
We will start from a visit to what can be considered the “Colosseum” of Campania, the amphitheatre of S. Maria Capua Vetere, second in size and importance only to the Roman Colosseum.  The amphitheatre of S. Maria Capua Vetere, having probably been the first Roman amphitheatre, is likely to have been used as model to its bigger and more famous brother.

You will be even more so in discovering that one of the most beautiful mitreans known so far is found here, too, in the almost unknown S. Maria Capua Vetere.
The cult of Mithras, of oriental origins and specifically of Persian origins, was almost certainly brought to Rome by prisoners of war later destined to be gladiators.
Admirably decorated with a cycle of exquisitely crafted frescoes, it leaves an impression and if offers a glimpse to the importance of its execution, despite the effects of time, the aggressive action of humidity as it is several meters underground and the negligence of men in preserving its integrity.
And if that is still not enough, we can also mention that the story of the most famous gladiator in the world, the Thracian Spartacus, has the same ancient Capua as its scenario.
